Religion of Early Childhood

I almost never blog about my religious history. Both of my parents were children of Greek immigrants, and when I was little, we went to church in the Eastern Orthodox denomination. Then, when I was in 8th grade, my parents transfered me to a Christian school affiliated with a Baptist church. Remember the Master Bator? That was the school I attended where I rode the saved/unsaved/saved/was-never-really-saved/saved again/not saved roller coaster.

In the Orthodox church, I never went to Sunday school. I don't really have a clear answer as to why. I think I asked my mom twice in my life why, and she gave me three different answers. The services were all ritual and chanting, so I never understood any of it. I had never even heard of salvation until I got into 8th grade, and of course, there I was taught that my parents' denomination was not really Christian and doomed to hell.

This evening, one of my facebook friends posted this youtube video about salvation according to Eastern Orthodox Christians. It's nice. Funny- I was raised Orthodox, and yet I have never heard this teaching. It's a pretty basic teaching, too. A lot of the images and the voice reminds me of myself. All of our religious lives, even if we are totally devoted to one religion, even if we are atheists or scientists or raised in two religions or admit we believe a little of everything- we all have our own religious mosaics. This is just one piece of mine. Nothing can ever capture the whole, but what a nice piece that I never really knew was there.
