How to learn sewing

Go to a cheap thrift store and get a diverse array of garments to take apart with a seam ripper and scissors. Take off all notions and establish a notions stash. Then, as you take apart garments, notice how they are made. You'll learn a lot of things about pattern drafting, fashion fundamentals, textile arts, and you will have one awesome fabric scrap stash when you are done. Then, search for DIY things that require fabric scraps. This morning, we went to Value Village and I did just that. I got a lot of genuine leather, silk dupioni, linen, velvet, and one size 22 white formal gown completely covered in beadwork for $15. (Altogether, all the dresses were 40 something). I began to take the beads off, and I am seeing for myself how beading is done instead of reading it in a book.

Value Village had a large section of stuffed animals that were on special 10 for a dollar! Stuffed animals a dime a piece! I let Annalise pick out ten, and she was in heaven. I also got her her first scooter for $4. All we have been doing all day is play with our thrift store treasures. Annalise is wore out and dozing, but it was a super fun day.

  1. That sounds like fun, and a great way to learn about sewing. We actually hit the thrift stores this week, too. Red Chief bought a calculator.
