This week for Children's Org. Monday, I was going to write about yet another political action group that is similar to the one I wrote about last week. However, it's not my desire to be repetitive. So, I put that one on the backburner and decided this week to write about The Sunshine Kids. I first heard about Sunshine Kids when they hosted an event at my workplace and I worked for it. They are basically a national organization that does youth-group-type events for children with cancer. When I worked for their event at my job, they gave me a little pin of the sunshine that is their logo. To this day, I still have that pin on my lanyard. They left such a great impression on me. What a great idea. Most of the time, children battling cancer are the only ones in their school or community doing so. Creating events like this gives them a community of other kids all going through the same thing. And, the entire family is involved. At the event at my job, parents were mingling, and siblings were joining in on the fun.
Here are some quotes from their website that stood out:
“We all have been through so much, and bringing us together was the greatest thing you could have done for us.”
- Sunshine Kid
“I realized, I am not alone. These other kids have the same problems I do, if not worse. If they can handle it, then I can too.”
- Steve Jones
